If you think computers are mundane today, they were mundane back then. That's just because there are a lot of mundane people today. Partly because businesses are so mundane. They don't want to know about the future and always want to look into the past. They're constantly doing accounting instead of probes into the future.
Things are done incrementally because it seems rational. But then it doesn't scale. So be radical.
